Can a Gal Get a Break?

July 23, 2010

Why do things have to be so difficult for me? Why can’t I just go to a chiropractor’s office and not have to decide if I’m going back or not based on The Quirky Factor?

She seemed so holistic and put together, on the phone.

She seemed to know what she’s talking about when I had my visit with her this morning. Unfortunately she did a whole lot of talking about stuff that wasn’t about me. And shouldn’t we have talked about nothing but me? Do I really need to know that she’s got issues with her landlord and some crazy tenant directly below her?

How is it that I’m always getting into these sorts of conversations from strangers? It’s not like I said, “Hi. Nice to meet you. How are the tenants in this building?” All I said was, “I like this building, have you been here long?” (there were framed pieces of art in all the hallways. apparently it used to be an arts high school)

Also? When you walk into her office, you walk into a big room that doesn’t have a waiting room, just a waiting area that is partitioned off by a see-through screen. Which would be fine were I her only patient, ever. But because she chatted so much, we went well past my appointment and into the appointment of the woman behind me. The woman who came in just as I lay down on the adjustment table. She worked on me for almost half an hour while the other patient sat, not more than 6 feet from my feet.

The chiropractor acted like she wasn’t there, discussing my health issues in front of the waiting patient.

Oh, and the woman who was waiting for her turn?

Our sons were best friends when they were in kindergarten.

“Hi Kathy!” she said to me when I sat up.

“Oh, hi [Mason’s mom]!” I said back to her.

I am so bummed. Because when the chiropractor and I were discussing diet and cancer and my feet and my back, I really liked what she had to say and how competent she seemed. This was before Mason’s mom arrived.

I can’t get past the lack of privacy and the jibber jabber I had to listen to about her tenancy woes.

So I’ll be getting the number of the chiropractor/physiologist and calling Mr. Frame Shop so I can get a consult with his chiropractor. After I find out what his office looks like. Good god, how does a chiropractor think they’re going to get medical respect when they work in such a non-professional setting? No wonder doctors make such fun of them.

And really? Something can’t just be easy for me? I have to make several phone calls and fuck around with my already filled schedule?

When I go to the chiropractor, I have to lie on a table in a room with three other people (if all of the other tables are occupied, which they usually are). However, he does have private rooms for those who prefer more privacy.

Weird. Weird. Weird. You just run into everyone you have ever met in your life – just when you don’t want too. You deserve privacy – and you deserve things to be easier. Another chapter in the book……………… See you on SUNDAY.

Don’t chiropractors have to follow HIPPA laws? I’ve never been to one, but shouldn’t they? Common decency would dictate that the “doctor” keeps his/her patients’ issues private. I’d especially hate being worked on with another patient sitting there, watching and listening! Sheesh – that would totally squick me out.

I hope the next one is better!

That is so crazy! Sounds like my chiropractor I went to a few years ago. He had several of us set up in a room getting all kinds of treatments (mostly electric shocks, I think). There was a guy not three feet away from me with his shirt off. Ugh.

Ugh. The only time I have ever gone to a chiropractor was a week before I had a trans-Atlantic flight planned and my back went out for the first and only time. The guy was just plain weird … mostly wanted to talk to me about how he is a Mormon and has twelve brothers who are all chiropractors, just like their dad.

    Yikes.

    It’s not just you….that’s weird…

I think, somewhere along the line, you’re gonna have to tell her how you feel. ‘Cause if you quit her for that reason and she doesn’t know it, she might give up the good stuff she has going for her other patients.

you’re smart to find a different chiropractor.

That would have been sooooo creepy! Shop around for a chiro with a door!

My chiro is the same, and he just moved to a new office, so he had the chance to set it up however he wanted. Very weird. You know my occupation is all about privacy, and every time I go in there I wonder how he gets away with having it so open. Must be a chiropractic thing. If you liked her otherwise, though, I wonder if she has a private room in back you could request?
